Porcelain Hour / Tea moments

A small starting guide

A simple session for exploring tea cups, pots and their place at the table, with room for your own observations.

A modest beginning

Keep a small tray and a pencil nearby and begin with porcelain cups. Choose a small question about tea cups, pots and their place at the table rather than trying to cover the whole subject at once.

Start with the brewing instructions supplied with the tea and the vessel you plan to use. Record leaf amount, water amount and the chosen time rather than relying on a remembered gesture. Keep a place for the lid and a way to separate the leaves when the infusion is ready. The preparation can be simple and still be consistent.

Make the note your own

Look at the dry leaves, the infused leaves and the color of the cup as three different observations. Describe aroma and texture in your own words without treating them as fixed properties of every tea. If you make another infusion, write its settings separately. A small drawing of the vessel can be more useful than a long list of tasting scores.

Choose a first page

A cup silhouette gives you a concrete exercise. You can also browse the whole journal and begin with the subject closest to hand.
